Getting Ready For Wedding Season

Have you ever wondered what it takes to get a venue ready for the wedding season? Or how long those stunning marquees take to set up? Well, we are going to share a few behind the scenes secrets with you – about how our marquee is set up and our stunning new feature on our estate.

We start the process of building our luxury marquee in the middle of February (the whole process takes about a month and a half), by washing down the external walls to ensure these are glistening once set up is complete. A week later, the frame is erected and we add the external walls into the frame. Stability and safety are of the up most importance when setting this structure up.

The second week, we focus on fitting the doors, laying the carpet and fitting in the internal walls. During the third week, the focus switches to having power installed, and fitting the bar and dance floor (we couldn’t have a wedding without any of these things!). It now looks like it’s really starting to take shape and you can see it as a blank canvas. We love picturing the magical events that will be held here in the coming months!

Marquee set up floorJust like when you decorate your own home, we add a little character around the marquee – a lick of paint here, and a new pot of flowers there – and the grounds are tended to.. Lastly, any equipment we require is delivered and all of the finishing touches are completed.

The venue is now ready to be decorated for your event. Getting the marquee and grounds ready for the season is a time consuming project, but we enjoy doing it and feel it’s a fantastic feature for your wedding reception.

New to the grounds this year are our feature stepping stones – installed in the middle of February, they run from the house to the road in front of this glorious structure, with a side path leading into the marquee and another to our beautiful 15th Century Gothic Church. They’ll make the perfect photo opportunity!

Stone roses – how to decorate a 15th century church

That moment when guests begin to arrive at the church and step inside is always an exciting one: it’s when everything begins – with that atmosphere of happy anticipation. And at Dunglass Estate, that moment can be particularly dramatic, because our church dates from the 1400s and in its semi-ruined state is the most romantic of backdrops. Combine the faded carvings and beautifully coloured stone with the softness of flowers and even fabrics, and you get a remarkable and utterly unique effect which can mesmerise guests as they wait for the big entrance.

Unusually, we allow brides and grooms pretty much a free rein when it comes to adding their own style to the church; some places can be very strict but although the building is precious (and looked after by Historic Scotland), within reason you can allow your imagination to roam. We’ve seen dark red rose petals scattered on a rustic hessian aisle runner; masses of candles in storm lanterns clustered around the altar; end chairs or pew ends decorated with little bunches of wild flowers tethered with raffia.

For the ambitious, you can hang muslin or tulle to create a draped, tented ceiling effect, or use vintage rugs and bold blooms for a striking look. Dunglass Church is your plain but beautiful canvas to do with as you wish; or leave the ancient stone to speak for itself and make  the bride and wedding party the main attraction.

Unusual wedding venue close to Edinburgh

If stunning ocean views and a ruined Gothic church is your style, then consider Dunglass Estate, a most unusual wedding venue. It was the “most romantic” place that poet Robert Burns ever saw, and that romance lives on amidst the seclusion of Dunglass Estate.

Despite the remote feeling, Dunglass is close to Edinburgh and benefits from superb road and rail links. Additionally, both Edinburgh and Newcastle Airports are within easy reach.

Set in the heart of the Estate, the 15th-century Gothic church is one of the finest examples of its period and design in Scotland. It is cared for by Historic Scotland and is one of East Lothian’s most popular visitor attractions.
