The Beauty of Intimate Weddings – Why Bigger Isn’t Always Better

When it comes to planning your wedding, fewer people can mean a more personal celebration. You’ve got more time to spend with your wedding party, your guests can really get to know one another and you can pay attention to those finer details that make your wedding truly memorable.

Here’s five reasons why an intimate wedding might be right for you.

Keep to a smaller budget

Deciding to have a smaller, intimate celebration can work wonders on your wedding budget. Maybe you’d rather put the money towards building your future, such as a down payment for your first house together, a once in a lifetime honeymoon or simply have more to spend on those finer wedding details.

A licence to splurge

Some couples like to have a small guest list, not because their budget is small, but because it allows them to splash out on other things. This could be a five-piece jazz band in the foyer of Dunglass House or it could be splashing out on the wedding dress of your dreams.

Treat your guests well

Personalised details are more manageable when there’s less people to think about. Your guests can truly relax and enjoy every moment of your nuptials without getting caught up in the chaos. There are so many ways you can add that extra wow factor and an added bonus is that you get to cut down on the thank you cards.

Think gourmet

Just because you’re saving money elsewhere doesn’t mean you can’t splurge on your special day. Why not treat your guests to an indulgent wedding breakfast served with the finest wines.

How does a five-course East Lothian tasting menu sound? Or maybe you want to incorporate some family favourites to your menu – whatever you fancy Hickory, our award-winning caterer, can create a truly gourmet experience for you and your guests.

Quality time with the ones you love

Ultimately getting married is not only the joining of two people but the coming together and merging of friends and family. With a smaller guest list, you’ll have more time to spend with those closest to you and your guests will have more time to get to know one another.

How many times have you been to a wedding where you’ve hardly spoken to the bride or groom? Create memories that you’ll cherish with your loved ones and take your time to really catch up with your guests.

Feeling pretty convinced? We don’t blame you! If keeping your wedding special means just inviting your close family and friends, our charming Intimate Wedding Package may be the perfect choice for you.

For a maximum of 22 guests, you and your guests can stay in all three of our luxurious properties on Dunglass Estate: Dunglass House, Laundry Cottage and Stable Cottage.

5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Wedding Venue

It’s your big day, and you want everything to be perfect. You want your guests to be comfortable, happy and well fed, you want everything to look fabulous, and you want the proceedings to run like clockwork. One of the most important decisions you’ll make is where to hold your special event. We’re here with a helping hand, so take a look at our guide to choosing the perfect venue:

Originality

You want your wedding venue to stand out, and to be memorable for you and all your guests. Many couples want their venue to have a sense of history and character, which makes for a great talking point. This also gives your wedding a great sense of atmosphere, as well as unique and beautiful photographs. Our 15th century gothic church, with its ruined entrance, is the perfect example of a unique venue.

Location

We understand you’re most likely to choose a venue for its visual appeal, however, there are a few other factors to consider. Can your wedding and reception be held in the same place? Is transport convenient for you and your guests? Is there the opportunity for a Plan B if proceedings are affected by the weather? Is there accommodation nearby for guests who have travelled the distance?

Your wedding and reception can be held at Dunglass Estate, in our marquee during the warmer months or a close-knit celebration in the luxurious Dunglass House. We can accommodate 31 guests within a close proximity and help you to organise a bus either locally or into Edinburgh.

Practicality

Your wedding should be a romantic, magical day, but considering a few practical factors will make everything run smoothly. To do this, you need to consider what’s important to you – do you need enough space for a sit down meal for 150? Or is it intimate enough for a small party of 20? Is there a well-stocked bar serving drinks at reasonable prices? Dunglass Estate can accommodate both small celebrations of 22 guests, to larger parties of up to 250 for evening marquee receptions. Catering

Whether you’re going for a traditional dinner or having a hot finger buffet, getting the best caterer is essential. This will allow you to create a personalised menu that reflects your tastes and prevents the rumbling of stomachs! For example, Hickory can create a bespoke menu, using the best seasonal and local produce around, suited perfectly to your taste and theme.

Value

Value can mean making your money stretch further, or paying that little bit extra for spectacular scenery or a particularly memorable location. Make sure you ask all of the right questions when discussing this with your wedding planner – getting the right answers will give you the chance to make decisions suited to you, your partner and your budget. We’ve a range of wedding offers to suit all tastes and budgets. Have a chat with our talented and experienced Wedding Planners about your big day.

Getting Ready For Wedding Season

Have you ever wondered what it takes to get a venue ready for the wedding season? Or how long those stunning marquees take to set up? Well, we are going to share a few behind the scenes secrets with you – about how our marquee is set up and our stunning new feature on our estate.

We start the process of building our luxury marquee in the middle of February (the whole process takes about a month and a half), by washing down the external walls to ensure these are glistening once set up is complete. A week later, the frame is erected and we add the external walls into the frame. Stability and safety are of the up most importance when setting this structure up.

The second week, we focus on fitting the doors, laying the carpet and fitting in the internal walls. During the third week, the focus switches to having power installed, and fitting the bar and dance floor (we couldn’t have a wedding without any of these things!). It now looks like it’s really starting to take shape and you can see it as a blank canvas. We love picturing the magical events that will be held here in the coming months!

Marquee set up floorJust like when you decorate your own home, we add a little character around the marquee – a lick of paint here, and a new pot of flowers there – and the grounds are tended to.. Lastly, any equipment we require is delivered and all of the finishing touches are completed.

The venue is now ready to be decorated for your event. Getting the marquee and grounds ready for the season is a time consuming project, but we enjoy doing it and feel it’s a fantastic feature for your wedding reception.

New to the grounds this year are our feature stepping stones – installed in the middle of February, they run from the house to the road in front of this glorious structure, with a side path leading into the marquee and another to our beautiful 15th Century Gothic Church. They’ll make the perfect photo opportunity!
